How accurate is the age calculation, and does it handle leap years?
The calculation is exact to the day. Rather than estimating from an average year length, it counts calendar months from your birth date and then measures the remaining days from that anchor point, so leap years are handled correctly by construction: a February 29 birth date is not shifted, and years containing a leap day contribute their real 366 days. Months of different lengths are handled the same way. If you were born on the 31st, the month anchor lands on the last day of a shorter month rather than overflowing into the next one, which is the behaviour almost everyone expects when they say 'one month later'.
What is the difference between exact age and total days lived?
Exact age expresses your age the way people speak it, as a number of years, months, and days, so a person can be 34 years, 2 months, and 11 days old. Total days lived is a single running count of every day since your birth, which for that same person is over twelve thousand. They measure the same span in different units and neither is more correct: years and months are what forms and legal thresholds ask for, while the day count is what you want for milestones, comparisons between two people, or anything where a single number is easier to work with.
Why does my next birthday show 0 days remaining when it is not my birthday?
It only shows zero on the day itself, and when it does the tool also displays a birthday message rather than a countdown. If you are seeing zero on what you believe is a different day, the cause is almost always your device's date or timezone being set incorrectly, since the calculation reads the clock from your own device. Check your system date first. A countdown of 365 days, by contrast, is normal and correct on the day after a birthday.
How far back can I calculate, and are birth dates before 1970 supported?
Any date the browser's calendar supports works, which covers dates centuries in the past, so pre-1970 birth dates present no problem here. One caveat worth knowing for historical dates: the calculation uses the proleptic Gregorian calendar, meaning it applies today's calendar rules backwards in time. For dates before a country adopted the Gregorian calendar, which happened in different years in different places, a calculated result may differ from the date as it was recorded at the time.
Are the total hours and total minutes figures exact?
They are calculated from the current moment rather than from midnight, so they change every time the page recalculates, which is what makes them different in character from the day count. Because a birth time is not entered, both figures assume midnight at the start of your birth date. The result is therefore precise arithmetic on that assumption rather than a true elapsed time since the moment you were born, and it can be off by up to a day's worth of hours. The years, months, and days figures are unaffected by this, since age in those units does not depend on time of day.
Is my birth date stored or sent anywhere?
No. The entire calculation runs in your browser, your birth date is never transmitted to a server, and nothing is saved between visits, so closing the tab leaves no trace. A birth date is one of the more sensitive pieces of personal data to hand to a website, which is why this calculation is done locally rather than on a server. The practical consequence is that you will need to re-enter the date on your next visit.
Can I use this for official documents and legal age verification?
The arithmetic is precise and suitable for filling in forms, but a calculated age is not proof of age. Organisations that verify age require a document such as a passport, national ID, or birth certificate, and many jurisdictions define specific rules for edge cases, including how a February 29 birth date is treated for a legal threshold in a non-leap year. Can I calculate the age of someone else, or an age at a past date?
