How to Use

Generates random colors, one at a time or up to 20 in a single draw, in the tone you choose: any, pastel, vivid, muted or dark. Each color gets a plain-English name such as 'Light Vivid Blue', its HEX, RGB and HSL codes and a five-color palette.

Choose a 'Tone' and set 'How many colors'.

Press 'Generate Color'. With more than one, the colors appear side by side under 'This draw' with their names. Click one to see its details below.

Use the copy button next to HEX, RGB or HSL to copy the format you need, or 'Copy all HEX codes' to copy the whole draw.

Click any swatch under 'Color Palette' or 'Recent Colors' to make it the main color. The palette rebuilds around it.

Pro Tips

For games, just read the name aloud. It includes lightness and saturation, so 'Dark Muted Green' is easy to picture.
'Any' often gives muddy or grayish colors. For art and decorating, 'Pastel' or 'Vivid' are easier to work with.
Only the last 12 colors are kept, and they disappear on refresh. Copy the HEX of anything you want to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every color equally likely?

With the tone set to 'Any', yes. Red, green and blue are each picked from 0 to 255, so all of the roughly 16.7 million combinations have the same chance. That's why muddy and grayish colors come up often: there are a lot of them. The other tones pick any hue but keep saturation and lightness inside that tone's range.

What does each tone give me?

Pastel is light and soft, Vivid is highly saturated, Muted is low in saturation, and Dark is low in lightness. Only saturation and lightness are limited; every hue from red to violet can come up.

How are the names chosen?

Each name combines one of 12 basic hues with one of five lightness levels and 'Muted' or 'Vivid'. Colors with almost no saturation are called gray, and the very darkest and lightest are black and white. They're descriptive, not official names from CSS or Pantone.

What are the five palette colors?

The first four are lighter and darker versions of the same hue, and the last is its complement on the opposite side of the color wheel. For near-gray colors, where a complement means little, it shows five shades of gray instead.
